We will attempt to make transportation to and during our workshops as simple and stress-free as possible—read below for additional information about how to get to Lawrence and how to navigate once you've arrived.
Please note: if you have a mobility issue that requires special accommodations, our project staff will happily and discreetly work with you to ensure the entire workshop program is accessible.
Getting to the Workshops
Lawrence is conveniently situated between the metropolitan areas of Kansas City to the east and Topeka to the west. It is easily accessible from several major interstates, including I-70 and I-35, as well as the Kansas City International Airport (MCI), located about 50 miles east of Lawrence (an easy 45-minute drive). There are courtesy phones throughout the airport terminals if you wishing to arrange taxi service; Uber operates in the area, with fares running approximately $50-70 each way. There are also numerous shared and private shuttle services that run between Lawrence and the airport.
Transportation During the Workshops
Transportation will be provided free of charge for most workshop-related activities. If you are a commuting teacher, you will be expected to drive to and from the Spencer Museum of Art every day. If you're a residential teacher, a private shuttle will provide pick up and drop off services at the SpringHill Suites. (Note: if you elect to stay at another hotel, you will be responsible for arranging for your own transportation to the appropriate locations each day). We will be using chartered buses to travel to and from the landmark sites.
Commuting teachers are highly encouraged to purchase a special parking pass from the University of Kansas (KU). We have worked with KU Parking and Transit to obtain these permits specifically for you at a greatly reduced rate. The pass costs $15/week or $4/day and will allow you to park in lots directly adjacent to workshop classrooms. (Free parking is available on campus in designated areas but space is extremely limited and most are at least a ½ mile walking distance from classrooms). More information on how to purchase parking permits will follow notification of acceptance. Although commuting teachers will be expected to drive to and from the Spencer Museum of Art every day, transportation to and from landmark sites will be provided free of charge.
If you are a residential workshop participant, the workshop hotel offers free, self-service parking. Transportation via shuttle service (to and from the hotel) and chartered buses (to and from the landmark sites) will be provided at no additional charge. Due to parking restrictions at the University of Kansas, you will not easily be able to park on campus and should plan to take the shuttle we are arranging for the group. Please also note that the hotel is within easy walking distance of Lawrence's vibrant downtown, which includes dozens of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and shopping. There are also numerous transportation options within Lawrence for those who do not have a car, including a bus-based transit system, professional taxi companies, and Uber. (In fact, we recommend not renting or bringing a car if that is a feasible option for you). If you are a commuting teacher participating in the July workshop, project staff will be in touch after notification of acceptance to discuss the best options for parking.
