Please use this page to learn more about your host, the Spencer Museum of Art, and the details and logistics of your stay during the workshops. We’ve tried to anticipate your questions and your needs, but don’t hesitate to be in touch with project staff if you need more information. Located in the forested hills of northeastern Kansas next to Interstate 70, the City of Lawrence is a diverse and multifaceted city that provides many of the amenities of a large metropolitan area while still maintaining a strong sense of community. Just 45 minutes west of Kansas City and 30 minutes east of Topeka, the state capital, Lawrence is home to about 90,000 residents.  Founded in 1854 by the New England Emigrant Aid Society, Lawrence offers a rich and fascinating history, a wide range of exciting cultural experiences, and nationally recognized educational institutions.  The historic downtown of Lawrence features one of the most beautiful main streets in America and boasts one of the most vibrant shopping, dining, and entertainment districts in the Midwest. A free, downloadable visitor’s guide offers tips about where to dine, shop, and explore this friendly, active, and culturally diverse city.

In advance of your stay, you may download maps of the city, including a new mobile-friendly version. Lawrence boasts a wide variety of restaurants that appeal to a range of tastes and preferences, and many local favorites are within walking distance of the SpringHill Suites.
